Vaporesso ARMOUR Octa Review: Kit vs Mod, and Pairing It with the Z Nano 3 Tank

Vaporesso's ARMOUR line has always been about toughness, and the ARMOUR Octa is the most rugged one yet. It's a dual 18650 box mod that fires up to 220W and is rated waterproof, dustproof and drop-resistant. You can buy it two ways: as the ARMOUR Octa Kit with Vaporesso's iTank T, or as the ARMOUR Octa Box Mod on its own. In this review we cover both, and explain why the GeekVape Z Nano 3 Tank is a great alternative tank if you buy the mod only.

Quick verdict: the ARMOUR Octa is one of the toughest, most powerful sub-ohm mods you can buy. Get the kit if you're new to box mods. Get the mod only if you already own a 510 tank you love, or if you want a compact tank like the Z Nano 3.

Design and Durability

The Octa is wrapped in a full TPU shell that feels grippy and slightly soft, with an anti-slip texture and an anti-collision pad. It's the kind of mod you can drop on concrete, get caught in the rain with, or throw in a work bag. Vaporesso rates it IPX8 for submersion up to 1 meter for over 30 minutes, IPX9K against high-pressure water jets, and IP6X against dust.

New to this kind of device? Start with what is a box mod vape. It's a dual 18650 mod, so it's not small, but it's shorter than you might expect at under 88mm. A swipe-to-lock feature keeps it from firing in your pocket.

Performance

With up to 220W from two 18650 batteries, the Octa has more power than almost any tank needs. The chipset ramps up quickly, stays consistent as batteries drain, and the 0.96-inch TFT screen makes wattage, battery and puff data easy to read. Battery life depends on your cells and wattage, but two good 18650s at 60W to 75W will comfortably last a full day of sub-ohm vaping.

Important: batteries are not included with the kit or the mod. Use two matched, high-drain 18650 batteries from a reputable brand, and replace them if the wraps are damaged. Our vape battery safety do's and don'ts covers the basics.

Kit vs Mod Only

The ARMOUR Octa Kit ($66.99)

The kit pairs the mod with Vaporesso's iTank T:

  • 6ml capacity with a stainless steel body and protective TPU cover
  • Slide-top filling
  • Precision top airflow
  • 0.2ohm coil (60W to 75W) and 0.4ohm coil (50W to 60W)

The iTank T uses Vaporesso GTi coils, which are easy to find and come in mesh and dual mesh options from 0.15ohm to 0.5ohm. The kit is the easy choice if this is your first box mod, since everything is matched and ready to go.

The ARMOUR Octa Box Mod ($52.49)

The mod-only version saves you about $14.50 and makes sense if you already have a 510-thread tank. It's the same mod: 220W, the same screen, and the same IPX8, IPX9K and IP6X protection. Vaporesso notes it works with the iTank T and GTi coils if you want to add them later.

Pairing the ARMOUR Octa with the GeekVape Z Nano 3 Tank

If you buy the mod only, the GeekVape Z Nano 3 Tank ($22.99) is one of our favorite matches:

Spec GeekVape Z Nano 3
Capacity 5ml
Diameter 28mm
Height 57.25mm
Fill Top fill, push to open
Airflow Top adjustable, leak resistant
Coils GeekVape B Series: 0.2ohm mesh (50W to 58W), 0.4ohm mesh (25W to 35W)
Drip tip 510, replaceable
Colors Rainbow, Silver, Black

Why the Z Nano 3 Works Well

  • Top airflow. The Z Nano 3's airflow sits at the top, so juice can't leak out of the air holes. That pairs nicely with a mod built to survive rough use.
  • Lower wattage, longer battery. The Z Nano 3's coils run at 25W to 58W, well under the iTank T's 50W to 75W. You'll get more puffs per charge out of your 18650s and use less juice.
  • Flavor-first. The 0.4ohm B mesh coil at around 30W gives a warm, dense restricted direct-lung (RDL) or loose direct-lung (DTL) draw that brings out dessert and tobacco flavors.
  • Cheap, easy coils. GeekVape B Series coils come in 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.6 and 1.2ohm, so you can tune the tank from big clouds to a tighter draw.

The trade-offs: at 28mm the tank is a touch narrower than the Octa's 30.8mm depth, so it won't sit perfectly flush, and 5ml holds a bit less than the iTank T's 6ml. If you want maximum clouds at 70W and up, stick with the kit's iTank T.

Setup tips: start the 0.4ohm coil at 28W and the 0.2ohm coil at 52W, then adjust up in 2W steps. Prime each new coil with a few drops on the cotton and let the tank sit filled for five minutes before firing. Keep it tasting fresh with our guide to cleaning tanks and coils.

What Juice to Use

The ARMOUR Octa is a sub-ohm device, so use freebase e-liquid with a high VG ratio (70/30 or higher) at 3mg or 6mg. Do not use nic salts at 20mg to 50mg in a sub-ohm tank, because the nicotine delivery will be far too strong.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • IPX8, IPX9K and IP6X protection with drop resistance
  • 220W from dual 18650s
  • Clear TFT screen and swipe-to-lock
  • Kit or mod-only options
  • Works with any 510 tank, including the Z Nano 3

Cons

Frequently Asked Questions

Batteries and Durability

Does the ARMOUR Octa come with batteries?

No. Both the kit and the mod need two 18650 batteries, sold separately.

Is the ARMOUR Octa waterproof?

Vaporesso rates it IPX8, which means it survives submersion in 1 meter of water for over 30 minutes. It's also IPX9K and IP6X rated.

Tanks and Coils

Will the GeekVape Z Nano 3 fit the ARMOUR Octa?

Yes. The Z Nano 3 is a standard 510 tank, so it screws onto the Octa's 510 connection.

What coils does the ARMOUR Octa Kit use?

The iTank T uses Vaporesso GTi coils, including the 0.2ohm and 0.4ohm coils that come in the kit.

Buying Advice

Kit or mod only?

Choose the kit if it's your first box mod. Choose the mod only if you already have a tank or want a smaller one like the Z Nano 3.

Final Verdict

The Vaporesso ARMOUR Octa is a tough, powerful and easy-to-use dual 18650 mod that will survive just about anything. The kit is the simplest way in, and the mod only plus a GeekVape Z Nano 3 is a flavor-focused, battery-friendly setup that costs just a bit more. Shop the ARMOUR Octa Kit, the ARMOUR Octa Box Mod, or the GeekVape Z Nano 3 Tank.
